2015 Acrylic on wood, 8'x4' This work is a representation of what was largely expected of women all throughout the later 19th and 20th centuries: a pretty figure to be seen but not heard. I put the empty birdcage where her head should be to emphasize the hollowness of this expectation. I wanted her to be an ominous and almost spooky figure to look at in detail, because I wanted the viewer to feel uncomfortable when thinking about how women have been expected to be silent for too long.
